“The Truth About Pet Cancer” on BrightU: How pet food companies turn feathers and beaks into “premium” kibble

  • On Day 2 of “The Truth About Pet Cancer,” Ty Bollinger and Lori Taylor discussed how “meal” in pet food is made from undesirable animal parts processed at high temperatures.
  • They explained that “4D meat” (dead, dying, diseased, disabled animals) is a legal but low-quality ingredient source for pet food.
  • Taylor stated that colors and fats are added to this unappetizing meal to make it appealing to pet owners, not dogs.
  • They argued that kibble, even grain-free versions, is high in inflammatory carbohydrates that break down into sugar.
  • The speakers concluded that this processed diet, full of waste and preservatives, creates a “perfect storm” for disease like cancer in pets.

For the past few days, Brighteon University has been streaming “The Truth About Pet Cancer,” a deep dive into the full picture about what causes cancer on pets, how to prevent it, and what options exist beyond conventional treatments.

On Day 2, aired on March 22, host Ty Bollinger talked about an explosive investigation into the pet food industry that revealed one of its most misleading and potentially dangerous ingredients. What sounds like a simple, wholesome component is often a nutrient-devoid sludge made from the most unsavory parts of the animal, a practice linked by experts to the skyrocketing cancer rates in pets.

The process begins with what the industry terms “4D” meat. As noted by BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, 4D meat refers to animal byproducts sourced from livestock that are dead, dying, diseased or disabled before slaughter, making them legally unfit for human consumption. This material, which can include organs, cartilage and even cancerous tissues, is permitted for use in some pet foods. The term highlights concerns about the low-quality and potentially hazardous ingredients derived from animals that were not healthy at the time of processing.

Legally prohibited from human consumption, this material becomes a bargain protein source for pet food. As former industry insider Andrea explained, “the cows that have died in the field, they sit in the back of the truck being transported across country, rotting in the truck and then they just melt it down to a chemical soup and that goes into pet food.”

This waste is transformed into “meal.” Lori Taylor, a pet food advocate, described the shocking reality: “Picture taking the feathers, the talons, the beaks and everything of the chicken and just dumping a bunch of chickens into a vat and then cooking it super, super, super high temperatures. It kind of turns into a cementy, gooey, brown pot of yuckiness.” This mixture is then dried into a sandy powder.

The resulting product is so unappetizing that even dogs would reject it in its natural state. To overcome this, manufacturers employ clever tricks. “We spray fat on it and we actually make it a color, which is hilarious, because dogs are color blind,” Taylor noted. “So who’s the color for? The colors are for you.” This visual deception, combined with flavorings, tricks pets into eating a substance far removed from their natural, species-appropriate diet.

The perfect storm for disease

The legal framework allows this practice to flourish. Dr. Karen Becker points out that while laws state that animals must be slaughtered to be used in pet food, they allow 4D meat. When questioned, regulatory bodies defend the practice. “They yell at us and say, ‘Oh, you want us to put all of that in the landfill? How dare you. You’re polluting our environment,'” Becker recounted. The implied argument is that it’s better to use this waste than to dispose of it, regardless of the consequences for pet health.

This “meal” forms the foundation of most dry kibble, which requires significant starch, often 40% to 50%, to bind it into pellets. Even “grain-free” formulas simply swap corn for peas, potatoes or tapioca, maintaining a high-carbohydrate load that breaks down into sugar. “Carbohydrates break down to sugar,” explained one veterinarian. “And sugar, there’s a lot of scientific evidence that shows that sugar feeds cancer.”

The culmination of these practices, feeding a diet of processed waste, hidden carcinogens like ethoxyquin and inflammation-causing carbohydrates, creates what experts see as a perfect storm for disease.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman offers a stark summary: “We have an American diet that couldn’t be more cancer promoting if it was designed by Al-Qaeda.” For pets, the daily bowl of kibble may be a primary contributor to what Dr. Thomas Seyfried and others identify as a metabolic crisis leading to cancer, fueled by ingredients no caring pet owner would knowingly choose.
