Large-scale study links cell phone radiation and brain cancer

Your cell phone may increase your risk of brain cancer, according to a study.

An expert review panel looked at a $25-million study carried out by the National Institutes of Health’s National Toxicology Program (NTP). The panel discovered that radio-frequency radiation emitted from cell phones was linked to heart and brain tumors, providing evidence of carcinogenicity, at least in animals. Researchers of the NTP study exposed thousands of rats to two types of radiation emitted by cell phones for a period of nine hours each day, starting in the womb and ending with their natural deaths.

Results revealed that the exposure to radiation was a definitive link that increased the risk of certain heart and brain cancers. Some evidence revealed the presence of cancerous schwannoma tumors in the hearts of exposed male rats. There was also some evidence of cancerous glioma (brain tumors) in male rats. In addition, significant increases in cancers of the liver, pancreas, prostate, and pituitary and adrenal glands were found.

The greater the exposure was, the greater the risk increased, exhibiting a dose-dependent relationship. An increased incidence of a type of tumor of the adrenal medulla was also found in male rats exposed to cell phone radiation.

The researchers also noted that there was also a “statistically significant” increase in a rare type of cardiomyopathy, or damage to heart tissue, in both male and female rats. Furthermore, they also noted that even a minimal increase in the incidence of disease caused by radio-frequency radiation exposure could have broad implications for the health.

This is not the only study that provided evidence on the dangers of cell phone radiation exposure. An Italian study published in the journal Environmental Research supports the results of the NTP study. Researchers at the Ramazzini Institute reported a great increase in the same rare malignancies found in the NTP study – even though lower radiation levels were used in the Italian study. In addition, these are the same type of tumors found in epidemiological studies of human cell phone users. Ways to limit cell phone radiation exposure

If you can’t get rid of your phone completely, here are some tips for reducing your cell phone radiation exposure:

  • Use speaker mode or a wired headset – When making or receiving calls, it is best to use the speaker mode or a headset to limit radiation exposure. Radiation is primarily absorbed through the brain when your cell phone is held up to your ear.
  • Text more – Cell phones emit less radiation when used for texting compared to calling.
  • Avoid using cell phones when the signal is low – Cell phone emits more radiation as it is trying to search for signal when the network is weak. Thus, it is best to avoid cell phone use when the signal is low.
  • Refrain from putting your phone in your pocket – Your cell phone is still searching for signal even when it is not in use.
  • Do not make calls when you are in any type of transportation – Your exposure to radiation increases as your cell phone keeps on reconnecting to an antenna because the vehicle is constantly moving. Moreover, radiation exposure is greater in enclosed metal like a car or elevator.
  • Switch off your phone before you sleep – You are most vulnerable to toxins and radiation during sleep. A lot of people sleep with their phones next to them or on their bed stand, exposing them to radiation and electric magnetic fields. Even in airplane mode, you can still be exposed to radiation because cell phone batteries still emit radiation.
